7 Skin Tricks That Will Cost You Nothing

If, like us, you’re broke after the holidays but looking for a good skin pick-me-up, fear not – there’s plenty you can do with absolutely zero cash. So stop dreaming of pricey products and save your money for more important things… like clothes.
1. Drink water… lots and lots of water. We’ve all heard the argument that skin is an organ made up of cells, which are composed of water. Therefore, the more water you drink, the better… right? Kind of.
The whole eight-glasses-a-day theory has been debunked, but studies have shown thatdrinking water improves circulation. While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee wrinkle prevention, dermatologist Dr. Margaret E. Parsons told the New York Times that “if dehydrated, fine wrinkles certainly seem to show up a bit more.” She added, “Staying appropriately hydrated is good for our general health, and if we are eating and drinking what we should, our bodies are healthier and therefore our skin as well.”
Also, it’s important that you don’t chug all of your daily water intake in one sitting. A 2005 study showed that those who consumed large amounts of water in less than 15 minutes simply urinated most of it out, while those who sipped water retained more of it. Moral of the story: Spend your days leisurely sipping water and you could reap the health – and skin – benefits
2. Get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Yes, there really is something to the whole “beauty sleep” concept. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. While you’ll certainly feel less glowing if you sleep less, a 2013 study commissioned by Estée Lauder showed that missing out on precious hours of shut-eye actually increases your chances of fine lines, uneven skin tone and reduced elasticity. The same study also showed that poor sleepers suffer from dehydrated skin and slower recovery from sunburn.
In a different study, Swedish researcher John Axelsson and his team found that lack of sleep can make one appear less healthy, more tired and less attractive. “Sleep is the body’s natural beauty treatment,” Axelsson said. “It’s probably more effective than any other treatment you could buy.” So stop making excuses and get some shut-eye!
3. Reduce your sun exposure. By now, this should be drilled into your head, but it’s easy to let those preventative measures fall by the wayside. Yes, you do need vitamin D, but too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging. The United States Environmental Protection Agency notes that “up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun.” Translation: Some of those wrinkles are avoidable.
If you’re heading out for a day in the sun, wear a hat or sunglasses and try to limit your time in the sun between 10am and 2pm, when ultraviolet radiation peaks. Oh, and don’t forget to apply SPF every single day.
4. Cut down on sugary foods. When you eat sugar or high-glycemic foods, your insulin levels spike, leading to what Dr. Nicholas Perricone describes as “a burst of inflammation throughout the body.” This causes collagen and elastin to break down, which manifests as sagging skin and wrinkles. Through a process known as glycation, sugar can also permanently attach to collagen in your skin, exacerbating skin conditions like acne and rosacea.
Instead of opting for high-glycemic foods with simple sugars, like white bread and candy, choose foods that are low-glycemic, like brown rice and vegetables. And load up on healthy fats, like olive oil and avocados, to keep your skin looking soft, supple and radiant.
5. Pat down – don’t wipe – your body after a shower. It might be hard to do, but resist the urge to vigorously wipe down your cold body after a hot shower. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, those with dry skin canmake matters worse if they wipe away the skin’s natural oils after a shower. Instead, the AAD recommends that you gently “blot your skin” with your towel to avoid dry skin.
Be especially mindful of this during the winter months, when the air itself is dryer and your skin is more likely to itch, flake and crack. It’s also helpful to limit your shower time to 10 minutes and use warm, rather than steaming hot, water.
6. Don’t pop your zits. Ever. This is a case where inaction is the best course of action. While it’s certainly tempting to pop that new pimple, it can actuallymake things worse, leaving you with scarring or even a skin infection. Yes, really – that popping action actually rips your skin and introduces dirt and bacteria into your pimple.
If you do need to extract, leave it to the pros. The extraction technique used by dermatologists, which involves sterile equipment and specific amounts of pressure, is a safer route.
7. Remember to smile. A 2011 study found that smiling can actually make you appear younger. When researchers presented photos of people smiling, a group of participants guessed that those people were younger than when a second group of participants were shown photos of the same people with neutral expressions or frowns. So if you want a youthful glow, just find something to be happy about. Or at the very least, fake it until you make it.

Are you following these 10 anti-ageing tips?

Have you started to notice the first signs of ageing on your skin? These could be anything from a wrinkle, age spots to fine lines around your forehead, lips, or even eyes. But before you reach out for the most expensive anti-ageing cream out there, why not make some lifestyle modifications that will surely work in your favour and prevent more such signs.
Avoid excess exposure to the sun
It’s the no. 1 cause of wrinkles with dozens of studies documenting the impact. Protect your skin from sun rays firstly by staying indoors while the sun is the strongest. Secondly get into the habit of wearing a sunscreen with a good enough SPF every time you go out. Apply it at least 20 to 30 minutes before stepping out in the sun and reapply it every few hours.
Stay hydrated
Insufficient hydration is the second major cause of excessive wrinkles. In order to for your skin to stay moist and elastic, it needs a constant supply of water. If you fail to get enough fluids in your body, cells will start to lose elasticity and eventually wrinkles shall start surfacing. Here’s how water affects your beauty.
Quit smoking
Apart from the many well-documented ill-effects of smoking on the body, it also causes premature ageing of the skin mainly by reducing blood supply and nourishment to the skin. This makes the skin lose its elasticity and moisture. Also while smoking, some repetitive actions like squinting to protect the eyes from aggressive fumes and constantly dragging the cigarette fumes into his/her mouth causes wrinkles over time at the corners of the eyes and the mouth. Click here to find out various techniques to quit smoking.
Get adequate sleep
When you don’t get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol – a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest and you’ll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more elastic and less likely to wrinkle. You will also feel less tired and there will be a glow on your face. Here are more reasons you need your beauty sleep.
Try face yoga
Just like yoga is a holistic practice that works on your mind and body, face yoga is a bunch of facial exercises to keep your face taut and younger-looking forever. We often forget to work out our facial muscles but these exercises help do the same and keep ageing skin at bay. Here are some face yoga moves.
Eat healthy
Consume a diet full of vitamins that come from fresh vegetables and fruits as well nuts and seeds, which are all effective anti-ageing foods due to the amount of antioxidants they all pack. Here are 5 foods that delay ageing and don’t forget to try these anti-ageing potions as well.
Keep stress at bay
Stress releases hormones like cortisol which decrease muscular tissue beneath the skin. This makes your skin thinner and makes it look wrinkled and old. Still don’t believe us? Read how stress affects your skin.
Use a moisturiser
Many women these days are so concerned with anti-ageing products they often overlook the power of a simple moisturiser. Skin that is moist simply looks better so lines and creases are far less noticeable. Also find out if anti-ageing creams really work.
Don’t over-wash your face
Tap water strips skin of its natural barrier oils and moisture that protect against wrinkles. Wash them off too often, and you wash away protection. Moreover, unless your soap contains moisturisers, you should use a cleanser instead. Here’s a guide to select the right soap for your skin type.
Consult your dermatologist
If you’d like to use creams, lotions and various other chemical and surgical options (like peelsfillerslasers and Botox) to fight skin ageing, you should visit your dermatologist who’ll guide you well after analysing your skin.

7 Ways To Nourish Your Skin From Within

Our skin often tells the story as to what is going on inside our bodies. Imbalances of the gut always come through our skin and scalp first. From dandruff or Sebborheic Dermatitis to acne, what we put inside our bodies matters more than what we put on our skin. Eating a healthy diet that consists of mostly raw fruits and vegetables and high in Omega 3’s can help hydrate the skin from the inside can help fight signs of aging, such as age spots and wrinkling. While many have spent hundreds of dollars on anti-aging this and that, it may be just as simple by adding these foods into our diets:

COCONUT OIL

Not only does this make a great body moisturizer and sunscreen, but 1-2 Tablespoons per day can boost metabolism, it can aid in better vitamin and mineral absorption which can improve acne on one’s face.  Other benefits include reduced cholesterol and increased energy.

SWEET POTATO

A sweet potato a week can help keep the wrinkles looking sleek.  Sweet potatoes are high in vitamin C which improves collagen that helps make wrinkles appear less.  Other foods that are high in Vitamin C are kiwi’s, strawberries and yellow peppers.

SUPER GREENS

While it is hard to choose which is best, green leafy vegetables, kale, spinach and mustard greens seem to rank the top in terms of water content which can help cell membrane growth and renewal.  This helps skin look more plump which giving it the natural glow you want.

WATERMELON AND TOMATOES

Both high in lycopene, which gives it the red color, is high in phytochemicals, a rich antioxidant that helps reduce free radicals that can be caused by the ultraviolet rays of the sun.  It is not ironic that these peak in the summertime, making these red rubies a must in your daily summer diet.

RAW NUTS AND SEEDS

Walnuts and flax seeds are high in Omega 3’s which helps to reduce inflammation and redness, while improving hydration in your skin.  Almond and pumpkin seeds are high in Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps improve free radical damage and is a natural anti-inflammatory. TURMERIC

This is a super spice that is being proven to help reduce cancer rates.  This spice is an anti-inflammatory and a potent antioxidant which can help treat acne, blemishes, blackheads and dark spots.  It is used daily by the women of India and Pakistan as a facial cleanser and exfoliant.

CLEAN PRODUCTS

While eating healthy is key, do be careful on what type of products you do put on your skin.  Because our skin is very thin, it takes up to 30 seconds for skin care products to be absorbed into our bloodstream and then to the liver. Many products actually clog pores instead of helping them and quite of a few of the chemicals are considered carcinogenic.
Finding skin care products that are free of parfums, parabens, mineral oil, dioxane, sodium laurel sulfate, toluene, and propylene glycol can help keep your insides free of these chemicals as well.
